In the United States, just being on a child’s birth certificate is not enough to be considered a legal parent in same-sex marriages. This is one huge area where equality is lacking, and because of this, we have to pay the courts to legally recognize what we already know to be true – that we are both the moms of our twins. Florida recognizes the mother as the one who gives birth, regardless of genetics. At first we weren’t sure if Kelly would have to adopt Jackson and Jaci would have to adopt Ella, but it turns out Jaci has to adopt both of them (including her biological child). We have decided to attempt self-filing, and we are going to chronicle our journey through that process. Check back here for updates on how the process is going.
